Upcycle your Clothes: Eco-printing with Plants
About this Event
This hands-on workshop introduces the basic concepts of eco-printing, a beautiful natural dyeing technique that uses leaves, flowers, seeds, and bark to transfer colours and organic shapes directly onto fabric. The result is a one-of-a-kind textile, coloured by nature.
No experience needed—just bring your eco-friendly vibe and get ready to create!
What you'll learn:
- Dye plants and how they work
- The use of mordants (colour fasteners)
- Fabric types for natural dyeing
Participants are invited to upcycle a piece of their own clothing or fabric by transforming it through eco-printing.
What to bring:
- One light-coloured item (preferably white), made of cotton, linen, rayon, or silk
- The fabric must be washed beforehand and free of finishes or softeners to ensure the best results
- Thin fabrics work best, and blouses are preferable to pants since they're lighter and easier to handle
- Any plants you'd like to bring
- All other materials are provided, including the Botanical Contact Printing booklet with all recipes.
Alongside traditional dye plants, we will also work with plants gathered from the streets, encouraging a deeper awareness of the generous and often overlooked nature that surrounds us—even in an urban environment like Metro Vancouver.
Led by the artist Fernanda Mascarenhas, this workshop is an invitation to slow down, reconnect with nature, and give new life to a garment you already own.
