This is the second year of the festival and we’re going deeper. Unspoken is an initiative by Tongues on Fire CIO, producers of UK Asian Film Festival. The festival is expanding beyond mental wellbeing to explore mental illness in South Asian communities — the stuff that often stays unspoken. We Will Speak!
We are hosting a special symposium on first day of the festival with speakers who work in mental health within the South Asian diaspora. It’s a chance to share knowledge, swap ideas, and talk openly about the unique challenges and opportunities around getting support in our communities.

Bridging gap between MH Clinicians & local communities
Info: This symposium brings together voices from mental health, charity, research and the arts to explore the mental health challenges experienced by South Asian communities, and the role of arts and storytelling in raising awareness, reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations.
Chaired by Professor Dinesh Bhugra, Patron of Tongues on Fire CIO, Professor Emeritus of Mental Health and Cultural Diversity at King’s College London, and former President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the event will spotlight the work of our Mental Health Charity Partners: Psychiatry Research Trust, Concern for Mental Health and CAREif.
The Symposium will be in 3 sessions and as part of it, we will also screen 2 short films, Relay-The Stolen Tales and American Fabric. Attendees will also have the opportunity to connect with mental health professionals, researchers, artists and practitioners, including those with lived experience.

Short Films
Info: As part of the Symposium, we will screen two compelling short films exploring identity, trauma and lived experience.
Relay – The Stolen Tales, directed by Ranjit Singh Shubh, follows a British family struggling to manage the repercussions of a traumatic past, when one morning the monstrous memories come swarming back.
American Fabric, directed by Nyla Hazratee, tells the story of two young Pakistani-American women who fight prejudice while reclaiming their agency in their own ways: one is looking to remove her headscarf, while the other longs to be a hijabi.
The screenings will be followed by a panel discussion with the directors, offering audiences the opportunity to explore the themes and creative journeys behind the films.
