The concert will feature the ensembles performing traditional and contemporary settings of music to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Included in the University Band’s program will be traditional patriotic marches such as E.E. Bagley’s National Emblem, and the national march of the United States, The Stars and Stripes Forever written by the “March King” John Philip Sousa. The band will also perform a new work by Leslie Gilreath, written in tribute to the American spirit, 13 Stripes, 50 Stars, as well as a contemporary setting of This Is My Country. A medley of ten tunes arranged by Chris Sharp and titled An American Spectacular, presents “A Musical History of the United States.” Guest ensemble Hawks in Harmony, a UND campus choir composed of faculty, staff, administration, retirees, and alumni, will perform North Dakota by Lois Steele and Jack Fulton; the beautiful and reflective In Flanders Fields by John Jacobson and Roger Emerson; and in tribute to those who have served in the military, an Armed Forses Salute prepared by Joyce Eilers. The ensembles will combine to perform a patriotic medley, Our America, and Irving Berlin’s classic God Bless America.
