Vocalist Kalil Wilson shares strategies for developing a balanced vocal sound in “Universal Vocal Technique.” This workshop engages singers of all genres with a common-sense approach to jazz, R&B, soul, and beyond, including those with classical singing backgrounds.The workshop will cover the fundamentals of breath and support, followed by an explanation of range and register. The focus will then shift to how to bridge and utilize vowel modification, with a final emphasis on playing with and sustaining vocal ornamentation such as vibrato and melisma.
Kalil will present physical exercises and a framework for applying a routine that builds toward vocal health and consistency. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out, Kalil’s approach to vocal technique is designed to help you achieve a balanced and healthy sound across all genres.

About Kalil Wilson
Kalil Wilson is a vocalist whose style crosses genres of jazz, R&B, pop, and even classical. They entered UCLA in the vocal and opera program before discovering their love of jazz, graduating with a degree in Ethnomusicology. Kalil’s albums include “Easy to Love” and “Time Stops.” They have performed across Europe and the U.S., including at the Metropolitan Opera House, the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. As an educator, Kalil blends understandings that lie at the core of many of the world’s vocal traditions to distill for students the practices and concepts intrinsic to the art of jazz and song.
