Andy’s presentation, Understanding Forest Carbon Offset Options, will address the new opportunity that the forest carbon offset programs creates for land conservation organizations and family woodlot owners. This presentation will review the basic ecology of forest carbon, describe how forest carbon programs generally operate, and review key questions to review when considering carbon programs and enrollment.
Andy Whitman is the Climate and Carbon Specialist at the Maine Forest Service (MFS). He works with MFS District Foresters to provide science-based information to woodland owners about managing their woodlands for resilience to climate impacts and improving forest carbon storage while managing for their other woodland objectives. He has an M.S. in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Maine at Orono and has worked as a research ecologist in tropical, temperate, and sub-boreal forests studying biodiversity, forest dynamics, forestry indicators, harvesting impacts, old-growth forests, and conservation practices. His lifetime passion has been on the sustainable management of forests for the benefit of humans and nature.
