The Cardboard City Sessions Collective are a new DIY advocacy group organising Blue Mountains events that aim to start conversations, promote social change and reflect new social mindsets. UNADDRESSED is their debut event, which focusses on Australia's current rent and housing affordability crisis.
Finding a home in Australia is harder than ever because so few rentals are available (0.7% vacant) and the cost of living is so high that many people spend over a third of their income just on rent.
This is even tougher in the Blue Mountains because so many houses are used as Airbnbs instead of for long-term homes for locals. It now takes about 52 years of saving to buy a house there.
To fix this, we need to work together by signing petitions to stop unfair rent hikes, starting community housing groups, and using local art and protests to show the government that real people are hurting. By combining political action with community support, we can make the Mountains a place where everyone can afford to live.
UNNADDRESSED is helping to address this need by presenting a multi-faceted public platform for discussion, Q&A, spoken word, and positive social liberation provided by the performing arts.
The event is presented in solidarity with advocates for housing, local Indigenous groups, women's groups, youth groups, and local business sponsors including the Low Carbon Locals Blue Mountains, Blue Mountains Women's Health & Resource Centre, Retro Rehash and The Little Lost Book Shop. Representatives from all of these groups will be present at the event, and local politicians will be there also.
Chai, dahl and snacks will be available.
UNNADRESSED takes place on the traditional Land of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.
