UMA | Urban Media Arts - A Hub for Media, Arts, and Community Connection
Explore. Create. Connect.
Urban Media Arts (UMA) is a dynamic 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides resources, training, and opportunities for media production, citizen journalism, podcasting, storytelling, and interdisciplinary collaboration. With a physical and virtual art gallery, a community reading initiative, online citizen journalism platform and diverse networking events, UMA operates three cable channels with content for and by the community and serves as a creative catalyst for professionals and emerging talent in media, arts, civic and science communication.
Our Mission
UMA connects community, fosters civic engagement, and nurtures arts and culture by offering media tools, education, creative opportunities, and networking platforms. We empower individuals and organizations to share knowledge, explore ideas, and amplify diverse voices.
A Hub for Collaboration & Innovation
UMA partners with organizations across Malden and beyond to bridge communities with essential information, cultural perspectives, and pathways to expression and societal change. As a connector, we bring diverse people with various expertise, perspectives, cultural backgrounds, age, and interests together in various ways: events, collaborative projects, and co-creative opportunities.
Our Legacy & Impact
Rooted in the public access movement championed by George C. Stoney, UMA continues the tradition of media democratization, ensuring that storytelling and information remain accessible to all. Established as Malden Access Television (MATV) in 1988, UMA has evolved into a vibrant hub where professionals, creatives, and community members converge to exchange ideas, showcase work, and expand their impact.
Whether you’re a media professional, scientist, storyteller, artist, innovator, student or aspiring media makers, UMA invites you to engage, collaborate, and push the boundaries of what’s possible and be in community.
