Ullambana Dharma Assembly in San Francisco
About this Event
Ullambana falls on the 16th day of the 7th lunar month, the day right after the summer retreat ends. Most Dharma assemblies celebrate the birthday of a Buddha or Bodhisattva. Ullambana is different: it is the day Buddhists gather to practice filial devotion for their parents and ancestors.
The day comes from the story of Venerable Mahamaudgalyayana. After attaining supernatural powers, he found his mother in the realm of hungry ghosts and brought her a bowl of rice, but the moment it touched her mouth it burst into burning coals. He went to the Buddha in sorrow. The Buddha told him that even an Arhat does not have the power to liberate his mother alone, and instructed him to make offerings to the monastics of the ten directions who had just completed the summer retreat. Mahamaudgalyayana made those offerings, and his mother was freed from that suffering and reborn in the heavens.
The first teaching he received, in order to truly help someone he loved, was to make offerings to the Triple Jewel and dedicate that merit. Offerings made during Ullambana are multiplied many times over. What matters most is your genuine, wholehearted sincerity.
No experience with Buddhist ceremonies is needed. Come as you are and take part.
