HHW Program Rules:
UCRRA reserves the right to reject participants that do not comply with the program rules.
  • Participants must be legal residents of Ulster County. No exceptions.
  • Accepted wastes must be generated in a home, and not affiliated with any commercial business, nonprofit, or institution. All participants must sign a Declaration of Residency and Non-Commercial Waste statement to schedule an appointment.
  • A Registration Period (for each event) will open 4-6 weeks before the collection day. Appointments are required to accommodate the high number of participants. In 2026, the Agency began using Eventbrite to coordinate appointments (also referred to as “Tickets” in Eventbrite). Participants can request their appointment time from the available list of options, until all time slots in the schedule are filled. Once the schedule is full, Eventbrite will maintain a waiting list which will notify you if a timeslot becomes available because of an appointment cancellation. Therefore, if you cannot keep your appointment, please share a courtesy of cancelling your appointment as soon as possible so that we may offer the time slot to another individual. To cancel your appointment, simply follow the link in the email you received from Eventbrite. Should you need assistance, contact the Agency at 845-336-0600.
  • Each household may bring up to 220 lbs. or a 25 gallon equivalent of the accepted items. No containers larger than 5 gallons will be accepted. Fluorescent bulb limit: 24 bulbs per household. The Agency reserves the right to judge the amount of waste.
  • Chemicals must be in their original, sealed, labeled container. If a product is not in its original container, or is an unknown waste or unlabeled substance, contact UCRRA immediately (2-3 weeks before the event) for further instructions. Contact Angelina Brandt, Director of Sustainability at [email protected] or call 845-336-0600
  • Boxes, gas cans, and other containers will not be returned. No exceptions.
  • Authorized personnel will unload your vehicle for you.
  • Please share the courtesy of calling us to cancel your appointment as soon as possible and no later than the Friday before the event. Only a limited number of appointment slots are available and this program is in high demand. Cancelling your appointment allows us to accommodate another household on the waiting list. To cancel your appointment, simply follow the link in the email you received from Eventbrite. Should you need assistance, contact the Agency at 845-336-0600.
  • Put all items (in their original, sealed, labeled container) in the trunk or rear of your vehicle inside of a large cardboard box or tote bin. Use any container that you don’t mind parting with. Containers will NOT be returned. This will allow us to unload your vehicle quickly, and it minimizes harm to you and other passengers in your vehicle. We ask that you please package any paint products separately from other chemicals (such as in a separate box in the trunk of your vehicle). Paints will be further sorted at the event. Please note: containers, boxes, crates, gas cans etc. will not be returned.

PaintCare
Did you know? You don’t have to wait for an HHW event to safely dispose of unwanted paint – thanks to PaintCare NY!

Paint disposal is more convenient than ever before, thanks to the New York State Paint Stewardship Law (enacted December 16th 2019, effective May 1st 2022). While all paint is accepted at UCRRA’s HHW events, free paint recycling is available at participating drop off locations. We encourage residents to utilize these sites for easy, free paint disposal.

Click the link for a list of PaintCare collection locations and full detailed instructions, PAINTCARE.

Please note: DO NOT dry the paint; it must be liquid paint.

Restrictions: Sites vary on accepted limit 5-10 gallons per visit.
Hours: Paint is accepted during regular business hours; Call ahead for hours and additional info.
Note: These sites accept latex and oil-based house paint, stains and varnish in containers up to 5 gallons in size. These sites do not accept aerosols (spray paint or other spray products), containers without original labels, or containers that are leaking or empty.

Residents with additional hazardous chemicals beyond paint should request an appointment to participate in the Agency’s HHW program.
