About this Event
Join Archivist Andrew Gray for a glimpse into the early growth of Easington Colliery, revealed through the archives of the Church Commissioners. These records capture the practical decisions and lively debates that shaped a community developing alongside its colliery.
The talk will explore the development of Easington Colliery through the records of the Church Commissioners, the landowners who oversaw much of the village’s development. These archives offer a vivid picture of a community finding its feet, charting everything from planning new facilities and amenities to the everyday negotiations that accompanied a rapidly expanding colliery village. They reveal how services, shops, chapels and welfare spaces emerged and evolved in response to local needs, painting a rich portrait of a place growing in pace with its industry.
