Shokazoba (Nigerian for “shock absorber") is an award-winning, horn-driven dance party powerhouse performing original, top-quality, and high-energy music to move your feet, inspire the mind, and activate your souls! Initially founded as a Fela Kuti tribute project, Shokazoba proliferates conscious awareness and positive social change through irresistibly danceable polyrhythmic trance music they call “new world funk.” With its unrivaled artistic creativity, prepare to be blown away. A blend of influences featuring Fela’s proprietary afrobeat genre, Shokazoba carries the Fela values of egalitarianism, respect for everyone’s feelings, and deep human connection through their passionate lyrics and joyous dance music. Shakazoba was voted "Best of the Valley" five times (Valley Advocate Reader's Poll), nominated for "Live Act of the Year" (New England Music Awards), won the 2017 Valley Music Showcase, and was recognized with several honorable distinctions by the African Jazz Review. Shokazoba is currently working on a masterpiece album as they draw ever closer to their 20th anniversary.
Maïz Vargas & Friends
As an immigrant from Costa Rica in Vermont, Maïz “Brujo” Vargas Sandoval uses his music to lead and represent Latin American heritage and culture in Burlington, VT. The founder of Mal Maiz, a band that explores the psychedelic side of Latin music, his songs weave together modern and traditional rhythms from central and South America.
