Feminists have long argued that patriarchy doesn’t just hurt women, it hurts men too. In this political moment, there is renewed attention to (1) the ways in which boys are hurting—depression, suicide, eating disorders, loneliness, high school drop-out rates, etc., (2) the ways young men are voting—mostly for conservative candidates, and (3) the ways in which boys are becoming radicalized—becoming redpillers, blackpillers, incels, white Christian nationalists, and so on. To unpack the questions of what and who boys are becoming, Sarah situates our current context within the historic trends that led to current assumptions about manhood, explains the communicative pattern of the contemporary “masculinity crisis,” and concludes with a case study of the ways conservative evangelicalism galvanizes these trends, recruiting young men into the culture wars. Sarah Kornfield is a feminist communication scholar who anylyzes the politics of sexism in US television, religion, and governance. She's a professof Communication and Women's & Gender studies at Hope Collee and author of Watching Women: Femininity on TV (De Gruyter, 2025), Invoking the Fathers: Dangerous Metaphors and Founding Myths in Congressional Politics (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2024), and Contemporary Rhetorical Criticism (Strata, 2021).
