Please join us on April 21st at noon for a walk with Kevin Ryan, PhD and Maine State Amphibian expert. We will walk out to the Vernal Pool, rain or shine to see how the pool emerges from winter. If we find eggs, we will bring some up to the large stone at the top of the stairs for you to examine with hand lenses and a microscope.
*** Warning! Be advised, there are stone steps down to the vernal pool and no railing to get to the viewing platform. *** You may watch from the top of the steps.
If we are able to get a good signal, we will broadcast Kevin's talk via Microsoft Teams from the field. To view this talk and others from the comfort of your own home, download the Microsoft Teams app and use Meeting ID: 939 801 137 154 83 and Passcode: 3mQ9tK to join the talk.
Kevin Ryan, Ph.D. Reptile and Amphibian Biologist Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife
Kevin Ryan is a Reptile and Amphibian Biologist with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. He joined the Department in July 2025 after more than a decade working as an ecological consultant in Maine. In his current role, Kevin focuses on the conservation and management of Maine’s amphibians and reptiles, with particular emphasis on Species of Greatest Conservation Need. His work includes field surveys and monitoring, data management, species recovery planning, technical support for environmental review of proposed development projects, public outreach, and collaboration with conservation partners, researchers, and communities across the state.
Kevin earned his Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Maine, where his research focused on the ecology and conservation of New England’s two rarest amphibians: the pure-diploid blue-spotted salamander (Ambystoma laterale) and the eastern spadefoot toad (Scaphiopus holbrookii). Prior to graduate school, he worked with the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Metropolitan Conservation Alliance as a Program Officer, serving as a field herpetologist and office manager.
