Hello Flower Arrangers!I’m absolutely thrilled by the enthusiasm I see for flower arranging and floral design. Many of you approach it like vacuum cleaners—eager and thorough—and that’s exactly the spirit needed to sharpen your skills.
I’d like to share something important about talent versus skill. Flower arranging is a skill. Talent, inspiration, and creativity come later—after you’ve mastered the basic elements and principles of design. Think of talent as having a mission, but it needs an army to carry it out. That army is your repertoire and thorough understanding of design principles. Once you have that foundation, you can break any rule, and your arrangement will still look intentional and beautiful. With hands-on experience and regular practice, you’ll begin to think and design like a professional floral artist.
It’s a deeply heartwarming, beautiful, and exciting journey to discover the rhyme and reason behind why flowers blend so harmoniously…or not! These principles are centuries old, tried and true, and universal across all the arts.
Our next meeting is on May 13 at 12 PM. You’re invited to bring a bouquet and a container—anything that inspires you to create an arrangement you’ll be proud of. Flowers can come from your garden, the store, or even your neighbor’s yard, and any shape or size container is welcome. (We also have a collection of containers available for use in class.) Together, we’ll craft arrangements using these proven design principles.
It would be wonderful to share snacks or a meal, but our chef is on vacation. If you’d like to bring food to share, please text Rob at 570-955-7132 so we can plan accordingly and enjoy a feast alongside our floral creations.
Remember: talent and creativity only come after building a solid foundation in design principles. Skill—not talent—is what truly matters. Skill is earned through diligence and consistent practice. Don’t be afraid to take your arrangements apart and start over if needed. Stay determined to master this rewarding art.
From my days at Parsons, I loved watching students begin excited by every flower and design. By the end of the course, their tastes became more refined—they learned how to create truly beautiful arrangements, relying not just on beautiful flowers, but on beautiful design!
So, dispel any doubts and fears about your abilities—give them no time or space to hold you back.
To sum up: it’s not talent, but skill—and skill can be learned by anyone with interest, motivation, time, and a little investment.
I look forward to seeing you on May 13!
