About this Event
Join the Reher Center for Immigrant Culture and History for a community commemoration marking the anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire.
On March 25, 1911, 146 garment workers—many of them young immigrant women—lost their lives in one of the deadliest industrial disasters in United States history. The tragedy became a turning point in the fight for workplace safety and labor rights, shaping reforms that continue to impact workers today.
In collaboration with artist Marian (Mau) Schoettle, this program will honor those who were lost through a collective reading of the victims’ names, with a bell rung after each in remembrance. Together, we will reflect on the lasting significance of labor history as a shared national history, and the many immigrant workers who shaped the garment industry.
In the years following the fire, elements of the garment industry moved north to cities like Kingston, linking this history directly to our region. At the Reher Center, we are committed to preserving and sharing the stories of immigrant communities whose labor has shaped the Hudson Valley.
Weather permitting, participants are invited to contribute to a temporary chalk memorial.
This event is free and open to all.
