Caring for these juvenile natives is a big job and we couldn't do it without your help!
Our volunteer events contribute to a chain of native habitat restoration projects along the outer green belt of Te Whanganui a Tara Wellington and is funded by Wellington City Council.
The aim of these restoration projects is to link the established forests in the south west of Wellington, with the large strip of forest between Tawa and Porirua. Forest connectivity is important to the long term health of our native fauna populations, as well as maintaining healthy gene pools for plants. Kākā for example are reluctant to travel over long stretches that are free of forest cover, and their populations have not spread north of Mt Kaukau.
The western hills around Churton Park and Woodridge make up the largest gap in the outer green belt forest. CVNZ is tasked with caring for the youngest forests until they reach year 5 and are much more self sustaining. These planting sites will one day make up a highway for native birds, insects and lizards to travel up and down the region, while also continuing the skyline walkway further north.
