Tree natural regeneration surveys
About this Event
In 2022 we surveyed 62 plots around Ingleborough to get a baseline of where trees were regenerating, at what density and which species. Four years later we are now going to resurvey these plots to see how things have changed.
Those original surveys highlighted that sheep grazing was restricting the ability of trees to regenerate. We are therefore hopeful that after the changes in management to cattle grazing at Wild Ingleborough there will be some new tree seedlings in some of the plots.
Time -
9:30am - 4:30pm
Location –
We will meet at Ribblehead Quarry, where we will car share to the site we will be working at that day
We will email details regarding meeting points, parking and details of the planned activity 2 days beforehand to allow us to check the weather forecast and adapt plans if needed.
Nearest Train Station -
Ribblehead Station.
What to expect –
* The task itself involves counting trees within 15m diameter circular plots. We will also record their height and species. This data will allow us to see how things have changed over 4 years
* You will be working outdoors around Ingleborough, between 300-400m. We will be walking approximately 10km on the day as a whole to get between different plots, over potentially rough terrain. We will be carrying equipment and personal belongings to the work site and being out in the elements all day.
* In clear weather you will be rewarded with beautiful views of the Yorkshire Dales! However it can be very variable weather here and coping with windchill and wet weather (even in summer) can be challenging so come prepared. Furthermore in sunny weather it is very exposed on the side of Ingleborough so be prepared with suncream and sun hats.
Facilities -
Please note there are no toilet facilities on site itself.
Mobile phone signal is very poor across the area.
Who can get involved -
* You don't need to have any experience as training is provided.
* You will need to be physically fit as this task will involve a lot of walking between each plot. We expect the day to about 10km walking over rough terrain
What to bring -
* Plenty of layers of warm outdoor clothing that you don't mind getting muddy as we will be kneeling down to get a close view of the trees.
* In summer a hat and sun cream are essential as we will be working out in the open without shade. Waterproof layers which can also be used as a windproof layer.
* Sturdy footwear, boots are recommended, as some of planting locations are in uneven, rough terrain.
* Plenty of food and water for the day.
* Tools, gloves and training will be provided by the team on the day.

We limit places due to limited car parking space and/or the nature of the task, therefore pre-booking is essential.
If you are unable to attend the day you are booked on to we would be really grateful if you could cancel your booking following the steps below at the earliest opportunity so that your place can be offered to someone on the waiting list.
