About this Event
Mountainside Learning Institute in collaboration with Nest Behavioral Health presents
Befriending the Nervous System: A Polyvagal Theory Informed Approach to Early Recovery
Trauma is often a driving force behind substance use. When use is reduced or stopped, symptoms of PTSD can intensify, making early recovery more difficult to sustain. In some cases, well intentioned early recovery interventions may improve short term functioning while unintentionally reinforcing underlying nervous system dysregulation tied to trauma.
This training explores how trauma informed, autonomic nervous system attuned clinical approaches can support sustained abstinence while addressing the ongoing impact of trauma. Participants will gain practical tools to better understand and respond to nervous system states that influence both substance use disorders and PTSD.
Learning objectives for this workshop:
- Identify the states of the autonomic nervous system implicated in SUD and PTSD
- Explain the impact of PTSD and developmental trauma on patterns of the autonomic nervous system and on “window of tolerance”
- Understand SUD and PTSD treatment through the lens of autonomic nervous system regulation and dysregulation
- Identify at least 3 principles of SUD treatment that promote ANS stability and flexibility
- Identify at least 3 clinical interventions that simultaneously support sustained abstinence and reduce the ongoing effects of trauma
Designed for social workers, counselors, psychologists, and related professionals, this training emphasizes skill integration, clinical sustainability, and real-world application.
