An intimate evening of traditional storytelling, passed down through generations and shared live for World Storytelling Day.If you’ve visited Grand Pillow Society events, chances are you have heard the name Shonaleigh Cumbers mentioned more than once. Her work has deeply influenced how stories are shared and understood within the Pillow Society. And yet, until now, she has never been with us in person. So we are more than thrilled to finally welcome Shonaleigh to our informal carpet stage for a special World Storytelling Day telling.
Shonaleigh is one of Europe’s leading storytellers and the holder of the Drut’syla storytelling tradition, a tradition passed down from grandmother to granddaughter. She began learning the art of story at the age of four from her grandmother who passed on more than 3,000 interconnected oral stories. None of these stories were ever written down. Folktales and wondertales, myths and legends, all passed from her bubbe’s (grandmother’s) lips to her ears.
For World Storytelling Day, Shonaleigh will share some of these treasured stories. Which ones? That is always a surprise. Even for Shonaleigh herself.
“You hear people talking about the storytelling revival, but in Jewish culture it never died. I lived and breathed the tales during my childhood, unaware that this was anything unusual.”
Dinner: 18:00
Storytelling: 19:00 - 21.30
Telling: €15
Dinner + telling: € 22
Want to go deeper? Shonaleigh is giving an introductory workshop the next day, giving you a chance to experience some of the Drut’syla tradition yourself: www.facebook.com/events/861006410038073
