JANUARY 16: “Up Close and Personal with the Brown Bears of Katmai, Alaska” by Janice Carmichael
Would you get off a boat in the wilds of Alaska and walk toward the largest bears in the world outside of polar bears, armed only with a camera and a guide?
Knowing her love of wildlife photography, Janice's husband prompted her to take this adventure with him and two close friends to the Katmai National Park and Wilderness Preserve. The Katmai Wilderness Lodge is located along a wild Alaskan coastline, on the opposite side of Katmai National Park from the more famous Brooks Falls.
Isolated and remote, this little-known gem offers rewards of a lifetime. Come see their photographs and hear the tales of their daily lives once the bears emerge from their winter dens. Fascinating, fun and entertaining, this is a bear talk you don't want to miss.
FEBRUARY 20: “Borderland Beauty; Sweat and Solitude in the North Pasayten Wilderness” by David Inscho
Having explored Washington’s precious wilderness on, and off-trail for 30 years, David has found The Pasayten the most beautiful, mysterious, and sometimes confounding terrain in the Northwest. Come along for some rarified backpacking scenery and associated experiences in the remote regions of the Pasayten Wilderness.
MARCH 20: “Backcountry Skiing in the Kokanee Range of British Columbia” by Gary Peniston
Imagine spending a week in the middle of a winter wonderland of snow-covered peaks as far as you can see, with no other humans for miles around. This presentation by Gary Peniston will show you just what that is like.
Gary has been a wilderness traveler through all seasons for decades, but this was a special trip. Instead of the usual trek on foot to base camp, this time it was a helicopter ride to a remote cabin, into the Kokanee Range of British Columbia, surrounded by grand vistas and untouched ski slopes in every direction. Not many people even have the ability to go there.
Gary is an engaging storyteller who has presented many similar shows. He’s also a talented photographer, who has exhibited his photos many times in Tacoma, before moving to Bellingham. Join us for a vicarious visual adventure of traveling through a landscape of serene and dramatic beauty.
APRIL 17: “Hiking The Medieval Villages of Georgia and the Caucasus Mountains” by Ken Harrison
Join us for a travelogue through the medieval villages of Svaneti which is probably the most beautiful region of Georgia. All those stunning photos of historical stone villages, lush green valleys and snow-covered mountains ... most of them were made here. We hiked from village to village along the base of the Caucasus Mountain range through fields of wildflowers, rushing rivers, and rugged terrain. The development of tourism in Georgia was for a long time hampered by instability but those times seem to be finally over, and the country is quickly opening to the world
