Time travel. Martian invasions. The future of humanity.H.G. Wells may be best known as the father of science fiction, but his real-life story is just as fascinating as his imagination.
This lively and wide-ranging talk explores 160 years of Wells’ life and ideas, from his early struggles as a shop assistant, to his rise as one of the most influential thinkers and writers of the modern age. Along the way, we’ll journey through his deep local connections, including his birth in Bromley, formative years around Midhurst, and cycling trips through Surrey that later inspired The Wheels of Chance.
Expect big ideas, surprising moments, and a portrait of a man who didn’t just imagine the future, he tried to shape it, as a political thinker, educator, and passionate advocate for human rights.
Presented by Patrick Parrinder, one of the world’s leading experts on Wells, Emeritus Professor at the University of Reading and President of the H.G. Wells Society.
As Wells’ friend, Cranleigh resident Frank Swinnerton, once described him:
“The merry, affectionate genius whom we knew and loved.”
If you enjoy literature, history, science, or simply a brilliant story well told, this one’s for you.
