Traditional Javanese gamelan workshop
About this Event
The gamelan is a family of instruments including gongs, bowls, drums, and xylophones, and is the traditional music of Indonesia.
In this session you will learn as a group to play at a fun traditional piece, and we will talk about Indonesian culture and performing arts. No musical experience required!
This session is also a taster exploring the possibility of forming a regular traditional gamelan group in Sheffield.

Lead by William Barnardo and John Jacobs
William Barnardo has studied gamelan for 10 years including one year at an arts conservatoire in Indonesia. He set up South Devon Gamelan and now runs The Arts Barge Gamelan in York. He is currently developing and performing a series of gamelan and shadow puppet performances as part of a research project at the University of York.

John Jacobs is a composer and has been studying gamelan for 30 years, including a year studying at an arts conservatoire in Indonesia. He has a PhD in composition for gamelan, and he co-developed and lead a gamelan module at the University of York, he has many years experience leading ensembles and performing with musicians in the UK gamelan scene and in Java, Indonesia
