"Crowns" is a musical play written by Regina Taylor directed by Vanessa Cunningham; Musically directed by LaVonte Heard and Choreographed by ChaDorea Robinson. The play explores the cultural significance of hats within the African American community, particularly focusing on the tradition of "church hats" worn by Black women, using gospel music and dance to tell the story of a young woman named Yolanda who travels south to live with her aunt after a family tragedy, where she is introduced to this tradition and its deep historical roots; essentially celebrating Black identity and heritage through the lens of headwear.
