Tour: Modular Affordable Multi-Family in Portland

This unique educational event will provide an in-depth look at the new Paul Edwards Building, which will provide 22 one-bedroom affordable housing units to low-income veterans in Portland’s Mill Park Neighborhood. The team behind the three-story multi-family project utilized volumetric modular light-frame wood construction which helped control costs and expedite the delivery of affordable housing. Attendees will tour the site with members of the project team, who will share strategies for successful, code-compliant modular projects. The tour format encourages questions and discussion, and attendees can expect to leave with insights into the project’s design, detailing, and construction techniques utilized throughout the building.

PPE::This is an active jobsite; attendees are required to wear PPE (Safety vest, hard hat, safety glasses) and sturdy hard-soled flat shoes. A limited number of loaner PPE will be available to those who need it – please indicate this on your registration.

Credits: Attendees can earn 1.5 AIA/CES HSW LU, 1.5 PDH credits or 0.15 ICC credits

Speaker:

Kate comes to WoodWorks with a decade of construction industry experience in the Pacific Northwest. Her involvement with wood structures began as an undergraduate student at Colorado State University, where she participated in the NeesWOOD CAPSTONE shake table test in Japan. She earned a dual Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering and Wood Science from Oregon State University with a focus in structural engineering. As a licensed Professional Engineer in Oregon and California, she was involved with the design of mass timber projects during the early stages of code development for CLT. Kate has experience in both the fields of engineering and construction management of multifamily podium buildings. Kate’s diverse background allows her to approach projects and problem solving holistically, with constructability and non-structural building systems in mind.

• Identify design and construction considerations for light-frame wood volumetric modular buildings that contribute to occupant health, safety, and welfare, including structural integrity, fire resistance, and code-compliant assembly
• Explain how structural and architectural systems are integrated within light-frame wood volumetric modules, and at module interfaces to maintain building performance and protect occupant safety
• Examine connection and inter-module detailing strategies used to provide structural capacity, fire resistance, and continuity of building systems in accordance with applicable code requirements
• Understand how coordination among owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and modular manufacturers supports successful design, fabrication, and installation of volumetric modular buildings.
