Sonic Sanctuary - a six-hour performance of Morton Feldman's 2nd string quartet

On November 3rd we are going to sit down at noon and play Morton Feldman's String Quartet No. 2 all the way through. It takes about six hours. There is no intermission, so we do not stop and neither does the room.
November 3 is going to be loud. It will be a historic day and a stressful one, and most of us will spend the waiting badly, refreshing something that has not changed since the last time we looked. We are offering the opposite of that for six hours. One piece of music, a quiet room, no screens, no returns, no commentary. Sanctuary is the word for what we are trying to make and it is also the word for the room we are making it in.
You do not have to stay for all of it. Almost nobody will. Come at noon, come at four on your way back from voting, sit in the back with your eyes closed, leave when you have had enough. The doors stay open the whole time.
Playing with me: Maia Hoffman, violin. Shintaro Taneda, viola. Marilyn de Oliveira, cello. Ask us how our arms are on Wednesday.
Everything we take in goes to the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition. The Old Church is giving us the room for the entire day so that can happen, and RBC Wealth Management is sponsoring.
