Happy November SeaDevils!
A big thank-you to Shirah Strock for last month’s deep dive into the kelp forests of Southern California. Between the urchins, the restoration work, and the scientific diving stories, it was a great reminder of how much is happening just beneath the surface.
This month we’re going global. Dr. Mark K. Vaughn is an Associate Professor at the Joint and Combined Warfighting School, Joint Forces Staff College, National Defense University, and a retired U.S. Army Colonel (Civil Affairs). He’s a PADI Divemaster with training in maritime archaeology, artifact-context awareness, and underwater survey environments.
Mark’s logbook reads like a world atlas. He has dived historically significant wrecks in Djibouti, Tanzania (Stone Town Harbor), Egypt (Thistlegorm and others), Saudi Arabia, Oman, Thailand, Canada (St. Lawrence Seaway), Mexico, and across the USA, including Rhode Island (Newport Harbor, U-853 and Black Point off Block Island, the Onandaga off Westerly), North Carolina (U-85, U-352), Tennessee (Fort Henry), and Florida (Spiegel Grove, Benwood, Oriskany). His cold-water résumé covers Alaska, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Iceland, and South Africa.
Mark will share his unique diving experiences in unusual and exotic locations under the title: “Today is a good day to dive! Yes, but is this a good place?!?!” Expect stories from places most of us will never see from underwater, and a few lessons on reading a site before you splash.
