The Power of the ProcessThis morning , something small stayed with me.
Not because it was perfect…
but because it wasn’t.
My son Ryan decided to enter a speech competition. For weeks, I thought it was a school requirement — only yesterday did I realise he had chosen it himself! Seriously? So much struggle!
What followed was a process full of ideas, drafts, frustration, and a few disagreements between us.
I also had my own strong opinions, and of course, moments of frustration. There were times when I really wanted to step in and give him the 'better answer'.
But I held back, instead, only asking questions. Out of respect for his ownership, I chose instead to ask questions and let him think it through himself, even when it was uncomfortable for both of us.
What surprised me was that even when I thought he wasn’t listening, he actually was. I thought he might give up, but he kept going — quietly testing ideas, trying again, finding his own way forward.
In that moment, I felt something shift in me. I even laughed, caught between frustration and amusement.
And I suddenly realised — it was never about the speech itself.
It was about the process: the struggle, the discussion, and the thinking we shared.
And that changed how I saw the whole experience.
His quiet persistence made me reflect on where this kind of attitude comes from.
I’ve often believed something Dr. Suzuki once said — that a child grows within their environment, and what they see and experience becomes part of who they are.
It made me think about the importance of what we model every day: how we respond to challenges, how we handle frustration, and how we keep going.
Not through big lessons, but through daily actions.
It also made me reflect on my own journey with Toastmasters at Kristin.
In many ways, it has become part of the environment my children grow up in — a space where speaking, learning, mistakes, and trying again are normal.
And perhaps that is the real power of the environment: it is not what we tell children, but what they quietly absorb from how we live.
This week, I felt deeply grateful — for Ryan’s determination, for our shared process, and for the reminder that the power of the process often shapes us more than the outcome.
