To See Takes Time: Experiencing Colors and Abstraction with Pastel

This workshop introduces participants to basic color theories and pastel techniques, guiding them through the process of creating their own abstract pastel artwork on paper.

In this two-hour workshop, participants will begin by exploring the work of American painter Georgia O’Keeffe and her unique way of seeing nature. The session will start with a short video about O’Keeffe, followed by a pastel demonstration and hands-on exploration of primary color harmony. During the second hour, participants will create their own abstract work with pastel, drawing inspiration from personal photos on their phones or provided landscape images.

This workshop is open to adults of all skill levels. All materials, including pastels, 10 x 13 inch pastel papers, and fixatives, will be provided. Please note that pastels can be messy, so dress accordingly. The class is limited to a maximum of 7 participants.

Instructor: Sang-ah Choi is a visual artist whose works explore the liminal spaces between painting and drawing. She touches on the vulnerability of perception and the uncertain depths of painting in the process of painting.
