Evergreen Ensemble closes Season 3 with the world premiere of Connor Koppin’s To Look West, a new multi-movement work for choir, string quartet, and piano.Rooted in the landscapes, history, and memory of the Pacific Northwest, To Look West reflects on the relationship between people and the places they love. The work draws on texts by early and influential regional figures, including writer Ella Rhoads Higginson, botanist David Douglas, and explorer and mapmaker David Thompson.
At the heart of the piece is the way landscapes hold memory across time. A shoreline, a river, a forest path, a sunset: these places change from moment to moment, and yet they remain recognizable. We return to them carrying memories of people we love, moments we cannot repeat, and the quiet awareness that others have stood in those same places with memories of their own.
Composer Connor Koppin describes the piece as “the story of people and places, specifically the natural world in the Pacific Northwest.” For Evergreen Ensemble, premiering this work here, in the region that inspired it, is especially meaningful. These are texts about places many of us know, live near, or have visited, brought to life through new music written for this ensemble.
