"The story is set among the clapboard houses, porch swings, and apartheid-style racism of the 1930s in the fictional Alabama town of Maycomb. Peck is the much-admired widowed father of the tomboyish Jean Louise 'Scout' Finch (Mary Badham), and her brother Jeremy Atticus 'Jem' Finch (Phillip Alford), whose obsession with their reclusive neighbour 'Boo' Radley (Robert Duvall) leads to danger.
Lee was delighted by the adaptation and Peck’s portrayal of Atticus: 'I think it is one of the best translations of a book to film ever made,' she declared. 'In that film the man and the part met… I’ve had many, many offers to turn it into musicals, into TV or stage plays, but I’ve always refused. That film was a work of art.'...."
