About this Event
Time and Tide: Mudlarking by Kayak
Please note, this tour is only available to age 18+ with a valid Port of London Authority mudlarking permit. Step into London’s past with bestselling author and mudlark Lara Maiklem, in collaboration with the London Kayak Company, for a very special mudlarking experience on the River Thames.
Travelling with the tidal flow by kayak, you will move through the city in rhythm with the river, arriving at stretches of foreshore as they are revealed by the ebbing tide. Along the way, you’ll learn about the history of the River Thames and how it has shaped the lives of people and the landscape of London.
There will be two to three opportunities (dependent on tide) to land and explore the foreshore, offering time to mudlark, observe and discuss finds. We will visit more remote parts of the foreshore and areas that are accessible by kayak. This activity will be led by Lara, who will share her deep knowledge and passion for the river’s history, bringing to life the objects, people and everyday moments revealed by its waters. Travelling the length of the great Pool of London, we will begin at Greenwich and end by the OXO Tower on the Southbank in central London. Between mudlarking stops, you will be able to enjoy a unique perspective on the city, passing under bridges and floating past some of London's most famous landmarks, including the Cutty Sark and Christopher Wren's Naval College at Greenwich, Canary Wharf, Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, the Globe Theatre and St Paul’s Cathedral. Journeying with the current means that this trip is accessible and suitable for all levels, including complete beginners.
