Á sjómannadag ætlum við á Byggðasafninu í Görðum að bjóða bæjarbúa og góða gesti hjartanlega velkomin á sýningaropnun ,,Til fiskiveiða fóru" í Bátahúsinu á Byggðasafninu í Görðum. Á sýningunni skyggnumst við inn í útgerðarsögu Akraness og Hvalfjarðarsveitar.
Bátahúsið er einstakt. Það er reist utan um 4 súðbyrta báta sem sýningin byggir á, en árið 2021 var smíði slíkra báta tekin inn á minjaskrá UNESCO yfir menningarlegar hefðir.
Raunar má segja að húsið sé stærsti gripurinn á sýningunni. Það skiptist í þrjú bátahús og bryggjuhús með opnun á milli og er óeinangrað tréhús með náttúrulegri loftræstingu.
Sýningin hverfist þó mest um fisk og fólk. Fiskveiðar voru helsta lífsviðurværi íbúa hér allt fram á 19. öld, enda er Akranes umlukið hafi á flesta vegu og Hvalfjarðarströndin er líka löng.
Saga fiskveiða endurspeglar vel þróun atvinnuhátta á Íslandi og við kynnumst því hvernig efnahagslegar byltingar og breytt lífsskilyrði leiddu til uppbyggingar sterkrar byggðar við sjóinn.

Warm welcome to the exhibition Gone Fishing at the Akranes Folk Museum in Garðar. In this exhibition, we will explore the history of the fishing industry in Akranes and Hvalfjarðarsveit.
The building is unique. It was built around the four clinker-built boats that form the basis of the exhibition. In 2021, the construction of such boats was added to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
In fact, you could say that the building itself is the largest artifact in the exhibition. It is an uninsulated wooden structure with natural ventilation, divided into three boathouses and a pier house with an opening between them.
The exhibition mainly revolves around fish and people. Fishing was the primary livelihood for the inhabitants here until the 19th century, as Akranes is surrounded by the sea on most sides, and neighbors the long coast of Hvalfjörður. The history of fishing clearly reflects the development of industries in Iceland, and we will learn how economic revolutions and changing living conditions led to the development of a strong coastal community.
