About this Event

The Institute of Creative and Critical Writing and the South Asian Media Research Cluster at Birmingham City University are delighted to present this evening of poetry and conversation on Thursday 21 May, 5pm-6.30pm.

Wine, refreshments and canapés will be served.

Join writer Rupinder Kaur Waraich for readings from her latest poetry collection Tigress with Wings, followed by a conversation with writer and filmmaker Raveeta Banger. Together, they reflect on voice and collaboration delving into how women’s stories are shaped and shared.
They previously worked together on Jugni, a creative output created as part of the SLANGUAGES research project for Creative Multilingualism. Following the journey of Jugni - the female firefly - the artistic project traces Black and Asian female experiences across time. Through intergenerational and multilingual exchanges, the work uncovers voices long overlooked and silenced by history, reclaiming stories of womanhood, memory, and resistance. https://www.creativeml.ox.ac.uk/jugni-female-firefly/

Rupinder Kaur Waraich (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist working across poetry, writing and performance. Her artistic approach is fluid and hybrid; through a feminine gaze she traces the meeting points of body, history, sexuality and spirituality, often returning to questions of voice and inheritance. Her debut collection Rooh (2018) was published by Verve Poetry Press, followed by Tigress with Wings (February 2026) with Seren Books. As a BBC New Creative, she produced The Girls That Hide and Seek, a spoken word piece addressing gendered violence. A two-time recipient of DYCP awards, she continues to evolve a practice grounded in curiosity and commitment to her artistic craft. Alongside her writing, Rupinder has extensive experience devising theatre across the Midlands, as well as creating her own original work for stage and screen. Across all forms, her work is driven by an ongoing exploration of the artistic self as both vessel and reclamation.

Raveeta Banger is a writer and filmmaker working across the creative industries, combining written, critical, and visual storytelling. Her practice spans screen studies and documentary filmmaking, using film as a space for interrogation, dialogue, and social critique. Through nuanced and authentic visual storytelling, she documents lived experience with honesty and care, amplifying underrepresented voices. Raveeta’s work questions dominant narratives through research‑led, personal and community perspectives, exploring identity, belonging, and social issues past and present. Centring Indian and British Asian diasporic experiences, Raveeta engages with race, caste, class, gender, and mental health, informed by a strong feminist focus through her film practice.
