Through Nature’s Lens: Reflections on Iowa’s Challenges and Opportunities

Iowa has a rich history of natural resource protection and thousands of our citizens actively engage with nature and organizations working to protect it. But we face many challenges – deteriorating water quality, loss of wildlife habitat, conversion of farmland to development, burgeoning cancer rates and threats to public health – and the continuing struggle to adopt sound soil conservation and soil health practices. The good news is all across our state individuals, organizations, and communities are working with nature to address these challenges and to build a brighter future for Iowa. In this program, the audience will have the opportunity to learn about many of these issues and consider the lessons nature can offer – if we take time to listen.
Prof. Neil Hamilton is an emeritus professor of law and director of the Agricultural Law Center at Drake University in Des Moines where he has taught for over 40 years. Raised on a small farm in Adams County, he has spent his lifetime working at the intersection of law, farming, and conservation. A passionate advocate for nature, he has spent 35 years on the board of the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, the state’s leading land stewardship organization. In the last four years, he has written three books – The Land Remains (2022), The River Knows (2023) and Through Nature’s Lens (Nov. 2025) – all of which detail Iowa’s natural and political history and document the challenges we face in our relations with the land, water, and nature. All the books share an optimistic, hopeful perspective of what Iowans can do to enhance nature.
Cost: $12 Nonmembers $10 Members Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Suitable for all ages.
