The City of Lewes African American Heritage Commission Presents:"This Used to Be My Playground"
Step back in time and join us for an afternoon of shared memories, stories, community connection and local Black history. "This Used to Be My Playground" will be a reflective gathering centered on reminiscing about a neighborhood space that helped shape Lewes.
It was more than just a playground—it was a sanctuary for the Black children of Lewes, offering them a rare space to gather, laugh, and play freely at a time when Delaware’s “Jim Crow” laws kept so many doors closed. Before this playground existed, opportunities for Black children to experience simple joys together could be scarce. This small patch of land became a haven, where moments of happiness could blossom even in the shadow of a divided society.
The playground also became a place where children of all races could come together. Here, friendships grew and barriers faded, as children discovered how much they shared in common.
During the program, panelists will share personal memories and stories of the Lewes Community Playground as it existed prior to the development of Shipcarpenter Square, highlighting the playground’s significance and the role it played for the Black community during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s.
Come learn about or relive the good old days, reconnect with familiar experiences, and celebrate the memories that continue to bring us together. Whether you’re sharing a story or simply listening, this event offers a meaningful trip down memory lane.
All are welcome. Mark your calendar and join us for this FREE event! Please RSVP by February 13, 2026, at the below link:
