The Rest is Practice: Notes toward a Philosophy of (musical) Sightreading
Keynote and workshop by Lydia Goehr, Professor of Humanities and Chair of the Department of Philosophy, Columbia University, New York.
Moderated by Marlies De Munck, Doctor Assistent, Department of Philosophy, UAntwerpen.
This lecture asks after the conditions of a music practice that begins with a reading off the page. What does it mean to be dependent on notation and hence also independent of notation? How much can it mean to play music "by ear”? These questions suggest a new way of connecting work-fidelity to improvisation, a way, however, that is also very old. To think through the “prima vista” of music practice, I explore some “early" treatises on notating music as well some “early" paintings that put ears and eyes into a critical and transformative relationship to each other.
