About this Event
As part of the Calgary Unitarian film series exploring social justice issues, we are hosting a screening of "Thinking Like a Mountain", a full length documentary film on the Arhuacos of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Columbia. While on the surface this ancient culture appears not to have changed in centuries, Thinking Like a Mountain reveals a much more complex reality. The film tells the story of resistance and preservation of nature, which is a voyage through space and time: from the shores of the Caribbean to the stars that light up the night on the glacier; from the Arhuacos encounter with the first colonising whites, to the homecoming of an Arhuaco guerrillero following the laying-down of arms by the FARC.
Discussion after the film with Brigid Catjoa who works directly with the Arhuaco and fundraises on their behalf.
All proceeds from the event go directly towards cultural conservation projects with the Arhuaco community, primarily through the Gwimake Foundation (see GoFundMe link below). Original art and other special items will be for sale at the film, to support the fundraiser.
Sliding scale tickets available on line as well as at the door via cash or etransfer only (send to magic @ rainbowcare . love (delete spaces when sending)
