think of others: qtbipoc revolutionary poetry reading
About this Event
liminal spaces with Yoko April Tamada
when we think of liminal spaces, we think of airports or portals, elevators or dreams. whether in the tangible or the imaginary, liminality exists everywhere & is fundamental to everything: borders, terrain, twilight, phases of the moon, monsoons & seasons & matters of the heart.
liminality disrupts settler colonial ideologies through a dissolution of linear time, hierarchies, and certainty. much like the land, there will always be moments of instability and impermanence. liminality rejects a level of knowing, anticipation, or predictability and replaces it with humility in the unknown.
there’s strength in not understanding/conforming, in questioning, or in remaining unfixed because the earth, the waters, and the entities that exist on these lands are perpetually in motion and ever-changing—nothing remains static.
the idea of liminality also forms the basis of queer theories, disrupting gender binary constructs and contrasting positions of sexuality.
we’re excited to share august’s revolutionary poetry reading circle of the 2026 summer series with you on Sunday August 30 from noon-4 pm featuring the phenomenal Yoko April Tamada & hosted by the wonderful Sohini wherein we will collectively explore the theme of 🌀 liminal spaces 🌀
we will gather at lake merritt close to the lake chalet seafood bar & grill at noon & walk towards the reading spot promptly at 12:15 pm. the reading circle will commence with a body & breath work practice facilitated by Teco, our somatic practitioner from a loving collective, followed by refreshments & beverages by our community chef Clover from bake it forward & a short break, leading us into the second half. the gathering will be archived by our lovely photographer Jada known (popularly known as blkvangogh).
accessibility: we will be seated in a circle on blankets on the ground. we will have a few blankets, however, please bring a blanket to share! there’s a washroom nearby. please reach out to us if you have any accessibility requests!
is a container for the in-between—a liminal space to gather, not to escape change, but to mobilize it. In a time marked by crisis, violence, and erasure, the act of witnessing and archiving together is urgent, talismanic, and grief-shaking.
Centering the voices of queer and trans poets and revolutionaries of color, we pause, listen to the voices of our ancestors, reflect, and read aloud, positing ourselves alongside insurgent poetry that reflects shared struggle.
Together, we find our voices, witness, slow down, reflect, and share—where discomfort meets possibility—and dream up the queer, revolutionary futures we need for our collective liberation.
free palestine, sudan, congo, and all oppressed people!
