About this Event
Please join BLACK MAGIC WOMAN Productions on Monday, April 14, at 6 pm for a script-in-hand reading of "Day of Absence," by Douglas Turner Ward. Light refreshments will be served.
Written in 1965, Ward’s scathing satire launched New York City’s legendary Negro Ensemble Company. One of the most insightful plays in the African American theatre canon, the piece remains as relevant today as it was when it premiered off-Broadway 60 years ago.
A “reverse minstrel show” (the all-Black cast appears in whiteface) usually staged with red-white-and-blue scenic elements, “Day of Absence” tells the story of a sleepy Southern town that awakens to discover the unthinkable: all of its black residents have disappeared!
Will the Mayor be able to stem the growing tide of chaos and confusion? Will the NAACP give up the tapes on where the black folks have gone? Will a neighboring town show mercy and send surplus Negroes to the rescue?
WILL THIS HELPLESS HAMLET BE SAVED?
Black Magic Woman Productions grew out of a need to create opportunities for theatre artists of color. Since 2006, BMW Productions has promoted an appreciation for the African-American theatre canon. Led by playwright Renee Lucas Wayne, this group of actors, playwrights, and directors continues to develop new works, re-imagine the Classics, and provide access to theatre for underserved communities.
This programming is supported by the LEDC's Art Committee, a volunteer group of The Lansdowne Economic Development Corporation.
