About the Book

In the mid-1820s, a series of anonymous and slanderous letters began circulating among the Govan gentry. James Oswald of Shieldhall openly attributed their authorship to Robert Watson of Linthouse. Watson, a ruthless banker, however, believed Oswald had been put up to this by the letters’ true author, the wealthy wit, John Kingan. Watson mounted a campaign of revenge. An implacable feud ensued, exacting a gruelling toll. It dragged in a cast of characters from the upper and lower ranks of Glasgow society. Many rued the day they had become involved. For one, his involvement proved fatal. The affair, however, enthralled the public.

The Vinegar Letters, a novel, recounts one of the most famous scandals of the era. It introduces the reader to the fascinating customs, mores and political shenanigans of a time of great social change.

Access Information/ Limitations

Renovations at Govan Old Church are underway to ensure Govan Old Church will be, for the first time, fully accessible.

However, at present, the church entrance has 5 steps, with a mobile ramp on site to assist when required. Unfortunately this is not suitable for larger powered wheelchairs.

Our team are happy to assist with venue entry and exit with advance notice of your visit. If mobility support would be beneficial for you during your visit, we invite you to contact the Govan Old team in advance, at [email protected]

Throughout renovation works, temporary toilet facilities will be in operation inside the venue. We regret to inform that these temporary facilities do not currently support wheelchairs.
