The Bob Dylan Center is pleased to partner with Chamber Music Tulsa for an afternoon of close listening to one of Dylan’s all-time classic songs, “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” featuring acclaimed string quartet Brooklyn Rider.Bob Dylan Center Director Steven Jenkins will present an overview of the 1964 anthem — a call for political action, social justice and personal responsibility in the face of both oppression and progress — by placing Dylan’s rallying cry within historical and musical context, and by sharing recordings and film footage of key performances, including a particularly poignant rendition from the Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement concert at the White House in 2010.
Brooklyn Rider — in town for several performances presented by Chamber Music Tulsa throughout the weekend — will then engage with Jenkins in conversation and perform a new arrangement of the song — commissioned by Chamber Music Tulsa for the quartet, with funding from The Barthelmes Foundation — bringing an entirely new perspective to Dylan’s timeless melody and urgent delivery, and signaling that “The Times They Are A-Changin’” merits ongoing exploration and reinterpretation as it change with the times.
Please note: this event will be held at the Woody Guthrie Center in the theater.
