“Come and Learn” in Blue Ridge, Sponsored by the North Georgia Master Gardeners, and the Fannin County Young Farmers. Award Winning Author and Environmental Educator Mark Warren Will Present The Taming of the Few: Wild Plants in Your Garden at the Fannin County Agriculture and Environmental Science Facility on August 1, 2026 at 10:00 A.M.
Mark Warren, owner of the nationally renowned Medicine Bow Wilderness School in Dahlonega, GA, has been teaching nature classes and Native American survival skills to adults and children for more than half a century. Mark has written extensively about nature for local and national magazines. He lectures on Native American history and survival skills, and Western Frontier History presenting at museums and cultural centers around the country.
The Program: While most gardeners expend a lot of effort in keeping “outsider” plants on their side of the fence and the “garden” plants exclusively on the other, there are a number of native or naturalized “weeds” worthy of consideration to be full-fledged members of your personal “garden club.” Come learn about the wild plants that can add diversity to your plot. The rewards include new and interesting greens (both cooked and raw), tubers to dig up or pluck off a vine, roots to be roasted for coffee, and berries so high in vitamin C that they have been known to K*ll flu viruses. You can also grow your own medicines that can resolve insect stings, inflammation, poison ivy rash, chigger itch, and excessive bruising.
Quote from Mark Warren, “All of us who live in Southern Appalachia reside on land that once belonged to the Cherokee. While these native people led lives of intimate daily interaction with their natural surroundings, most folks today have reduced nature to a backdrop of scenery. The great deficit in this scenario is our lack of understanding that we still depend upon nature. Air to breathe, water to drink, energy to consume for our daily actions. These are commodities that are easy to take for granted. If these gifts are taken for granted, humans will have no reason to respect and conserve the pieces of the puzzle we call ecology."
Warren is the author of 20 traditionally published books. His Secrets of the Forest book series will be available for purchase at this event as well as other award-winning titles. Find out more about Mark Warren on his website at www.markwarrenbooks.com
