About this Event

Free and open to all.

A special event celebrating the launch of The Story of British Video Activism, (BFI/Bloomsbury) the first book-length study of this radical and often overlooked chapter in moving image history.

Author Ed Webb-Ingall will discuss how the arrival of affordable, portable videotape transformed political filmmaking in Britain from the late 1960s onwards. Long before the digital age, activists, artists, and community groups seized on video’s immediacy and flexibility to document struggles, organise resistance and challenge power. The book traces video’s role in campaigns around housing, labour rights, racial justice and environmental and AIDS activism.

The discussion will be accompanied by a curated selection of video excerpts. Webb-Ingall will reflect on the democratising promise of analogue video, the grassroots radicalism of those who put cameras into the hands of marginalised communities, and how the spirit of video activism continues to shape today’s digital landscape.
