About this Event

The Stories They Hear: Expecting Greatness as the Key to Success chronicles the transformative work of Dr. Bill Keyes, founder of the Institute for Responsible Citizenship, a program that has reshaped the lives of more than 300 young men since its inception in 2003. These scholars—now Rhodes Scholars, Fulbright Scholars, doctors, lawyers, professors, and community leaders—credit the Institute with helping them unlock their potential and achieve remarkable success.

The Stories They Hear offers readers a rare and intimate glimpse into the lessons and principles that have guided these men to greatness. With personal stories and valuable insights, Dr. Keyes shares wisdom on topics such as discovering one’s unique gifts, wielding influence responsibly, and building resilience in the face of life’s challenges. These lessons, imparted around a dinner table in Washington, D.C., are now accessible to anyone seeking inspiration and guidance.

“This book is a blueprint for mentors, educators, and community leaders dedicated to helping young people realize their full potential," promises Dr. Keyes

Beyond a celebration of individual achievements, The Stories They Hear calls on readers to recognize the broader implications of investing in young talent. It is both an inspiring narrative and a practical guide for creating a legacy of empowerment, service, and leadership.

Dr. William A. Keyes is joining us on the Busboys stage to offer “a glimpse into the special sauce required in propagating unapologetic excellence in Black boys and men” (Calvin D. Hadley '07, PhD, Institute for Responsible Citizenship alumnus). Copies of the book will be available for purchase during and after the event, and Dr. Keyes will be signing following the program.

This event is free and open to all. Our program begins at 5:00 pm, and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Copies of THE STORIES THEY HEAR will be available for purchase before and after the event. Please note that this event is in person and will not be livestreamed.

We ask that guests RSVP in order to receive direct updates about the event from Busboys and Poets Books

William A. Keyes IV, PhD. moved to Washington more than 40 years ago to work on Capitol Hill and then as a White House Senior Policy Advisor. In 2001, he established the Institute for Responsible Citizenship, the crowning achievement of his professional life. In that capacity, he has become an advisor and mentor to more than 300 young men. Most importantly, he is a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
