Backstage with Chris Murray and Walter Egan

is a writer, curator, and the founder of Govinda Gallery in Washington, DC, which he established in 1975. He hosted the first-ever exhibition of celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz during her tenure as chief photographer at Rolling Stone. Under his leadership, Govinda Gallery became the world’s leading gallery specializing in photography related to contemporary music.

Chris has edited or co-authored over 25 photography books, featuring legends such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, George Harrison, Bob Marley, and Patti Smith. He has also organized more than 250 exhibitions in galleries and museums around the world, showcasing the work of some of the greatest music photographers of our time.

The multi-talented is a musician, singer, composer, writer, artist, and sculptor. He is best known for his million-selling 1978 hit "Magnet and Steel," which was featured in the film Boogie Nights. Walter also wrote "Hearts on Fire," later recorded by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, and "Hot Summer Nights," which became the first hit for the band Night. He has continued to create original music both as a solo artist and as a member of bands such as The Malibooz, The Brooklyn Cowboys, and Spirit.

What’s the Connection?

Chris and Walter’s story began in high school in New York City, where they joined The Malibooz with their friend John Zambetti. This band featured British Invasion and surf music. Their friendship continued at Georgetown University, where Walter went on to form the band Sageworth and Drums. Chris later exhibited Walter’s paintings, Martyrs of Rock & Roll, in galleries in Washington and Los Angeles.

Now, after decades of pursuing their respective creative paths, they reunite for an afternoon of conversation, storytelling, and a rare musical performance together for the first time in decades.

Guiding the conversation is Mark Segraves of NBC 4, who will lead what promises to be a fascinating discussion about music, art, and the creative journeys that have defined both Chris and Walter’s lives.
