About this Event
The Space Inside My Hand invites participants to contribute to a growing ceramic artwork through a sensory encounter with raw clay.
Thinking of the hand as our first tool and clay as land, one of the earliest materials humans have shaped. This tactile workshop centers on touch as a way of listening: to material, body, and what we carry within ourselves.
Through intuitive play, come and shape small ceramic forms entirely by hand.
The works become part of The Space Inside My Hand in Turf’s spring exhibition Tending, where visitors will be invited to pick up and hold them, continuing the cycle of touch, care, and connection initiated during the workshop.
All will be invited to an optional follow-up workshop on Sat 21 Mar for participants to return to glaze their pieces. This workshop will be recorded for Tending Transmission: a temporary radio station, aiming to interrupt the sounds of Croydon with audio interventions from Tending.
ABOUT LINA:
Lina Ivanova is a Bulgarian artist and teacher based in London. Driven by an investigation into the materiality of photography, her approach to practice is multidisciplinary, experimental and process-led. Drawing analogies between photography and sculpture, Lina’s work is informed by personal histories, social structures, and lived experiences, and reflects on archival and educational processes. Often site-specific in nature, her installations aim to foster a dialogue with local communities, creating a space for reflection and collaboration.
Lina graduated with a BA in Photography from the University of Portsmouth in 2015, co-founded Revolv Collective in 2017, and won the Turner Contemporary Portfolio Prize in 2018. Her work has been exhibited by institutions such as the RPS, Goethe-Institut Bulgaria, and Peckham 24. Since 2023, Turf Projects has supported Lina’s practice through several community project commissions in and around Croydon, marking a significant step in the evolution of her work toward a more socially engaged practice.
ABOUT TURF:
Founded in 2013 by Croydon locals, Turf is Croydon’s homegrown artist space and the first entirely artist-run contemporary art space in the borough. Based in Croydon’s Whitgift Shopping Centre, we put on free exhibitions 7 workshops, provide affordable artist studios, run a free creative project space for locals & host a number of other local creative organisations and collectives. A registered charity, Turf aims to provide paid opportunities for artists and creatives who might otherwise be undersupported.
A request from the Turf team - if you book, please turn up!
Around 30% of people booking free tickets don't attend. As a charity, we aim to support people who need creative opportunities the most and our free tickets are limited and in high demand. Every person who doesn’t turn up means someone else can’t attend, so please let us know if you can’t make it to free up a space. If you don’t attend twice or more without letting us know, you may be restricted from booking again.
