About this Event
Created, performed, and lauded at festivals abroad, "Initial Dissent" comes to Nashville for the first time in a thought-provoking evening of inspiring dance performance and community discussion.
The Performance - Initial Dissent
A bell tolls.
Papers flutter through the air.
A woman shape-shifts before our eyes.
The knee-jerk accuser softens, the rigid zealot is brought to her knees, the repentant daughter becomes a callous force of nature. She is on the brink of transformation into her own definition of a villain.
The Screening - What lies between
Created as a sister work to Initial Dissent - this filmed performance by the MTSU Dance Department offers another perspective into the subject matter and themes of the live performance. What Lies Between examines the threshold between deep-seated internal narratives and the uncertain terrain of transformation. It explores the haunting echoes of our former selves, asking: How do we move forward when the past still lingers in our bones?
Post-Performance Discussion
Initial Dissent explores the aftermath of Hoback's tumultuous relationship with religion and shattered ideals of purity. Bringing together a mindful group of licensed mental health professionals, divinity school professors, and progressive church leaders, Enactor Productions aims to bring the harmful effects of purity culture to light in discussion. This conversation will be free to the community and optional for all audience members. We will conclude the evening with time and space for community discussion.

About "The Sacral Series"
Sacral is a series of dance theater solos that explore the harmful effects of purity culture (prevalent in white evangelical circles in the 90s, still affecting fundamentalist religions today). Those who leave this repressive ideology deal with negative emotional ramifications. Drawing from personal experiences, Hoback explores the complex emotions in the deconstruction process by exploring physical states of tension, and personifies these experiences in theatrical situations. Blending evocative choreography, dramaturgy, minimal set pieces, a layered score, and intentional lighting to immerse audiences into the experience, these dances serve as a medium to process and challenge the pressure to conform to an idealized idea of purity.
About Enactor Productions
Enactor Productions creates contemporary dance theater performances and workshops that use movement to process life experiences and embody transformation. Breaking free from her conservative religious upbringing and strict ballet training, Becca Hoback explores identity and the emotional body through contemporary dance.
