Full Talk Title: The Rural Roots of China’s Macroeconomy: Why Rural China Mattered Before and Still Matters for China and for the World
Speaker: Benjamin Hiramatsu Ireland, Associate Professor of French and Director of Asian Studies, Texas Christian University
Moderator: Junyan Jiang, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Columbia University
Urban high rises and technology dominate discussions about the Chinese economy, but many of the salient features of the Chinese economy, such as overcapacity and surging exports, have roots in rural China. This talk traces how developments in rural China have shaped China’s economic model, its growth patterns, and its growth prospects.
