About this Event

"How shy neutrinos power spectacular explosions"

Neutrinos are the second most abundant particles in the universe. Yet, thanks to their nature they barely interact and are known as ghostly particles. How is it possible then they are responsible for spectacular supernova explosions? In this talk, Anna Suliga will tell the story how astrophysicists and particle physicists came together to solve the mystery of missing neutrinos from our Sun and exploding massive stars. Expect tasty analogies in at least three flavors, mesmerizing pictures of supernova explosions, and a number of neutrino mysteries remaining to be solved.

Anna Suliga is a postdoctoral researcher in astroparticle physics at NYU’s Center for Cosmology and Particle Physics and an affiliate at the Fermi National Laboratory. Her research is primarily focused on investigating the role of new neutrino physics on the stellar evolution. She earned her engineering degree (BSc) in Poland, PhD in Denmark, and has worked in the United States. In addition to research, she enjoys mentoring students transferring from community colleges to research institutions.
