About this Event

Join us for a timely and engaging conversation with Steven Hahn, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and Professor Emeritus at New York University, on his acclaimed book Illiberal America. In this compelling work, Hahn examines the often-overlooked history of illiberal movements in the United States, tracing how struggles over race, citizenship, democracy, and political power have shaped the nation from its founding to the present day.

Hahn is one of the nation's most distinguished historians. He is the author of numerous influential works, including A Nation Under Our Feet, which won the Pulitzer Prize for History, as well as The Political Worlds of Slavery and Freedom and A Nation Without Borders. His scholarship has transformed the study of American political and social history and has deepened our understanding of democracy and exclusion in the United States.

The conversation will be moderated by Professor David Rudenstine, Sheldon H. Solow Professor of Law at Cardozo School of Law. A renowned constitutional scholar and legal historian, Rudenstine is the author of several acclaimed books on constitutional law, civil liberties, and government accountability. His work has focused extensively on the Constitution, freedom of information, and the role of the courts in American democracy.

Together, Hahn and Rudenstine will explore the historical roots of illiberalism in America, its continuing influence on contemporary politics, and what this history can teach us about the challenges facing democracy today.

A book sale and light reception will follow the event.
